The owners of this classic home on top of Queen Anne approached Carlisle Classic Homes with two goals in mind -- restore the original look and feel of their home and make it more comfortable and energy efficient The original windows were drafty and no longer functioned and the once beautiful and intricate stained mouldings had so many coats of paint on them that the intricate detail work was hardly visible. Hardwood flooring had been removed and replaced with low grade carpet which was well past the end of its lifespan. The bathroom badly needed to be updated. At some point in time, most of the original siding on the house had been replaced with an unattractive shingle siding. Working from a historical archive photo, CCH was able to bring back the original siding scheme to the house. However, instead of using cedar siding as would have been used originally, the patterns were recreated using fiber cement siding, a product that is not only more durable and requires less maintenance, but is also a more environmentally conscious choice. New, clear fir, front and rear doors were installed along with two pairs of wood corbels, which were custom made based on the archive photo, to complete the exterior transformation. The last phase of the project was the detached garage. The existing garage was more of a shed than a garage and the foundation was crumbling. After an initial investigation, it was determined that it would be more cost effective and a better finished product if we started from scratch. The original garage was demolished and a new two car garage was installed in its place. The garage exterior siding and paint details match the home and the interior is insulated and heated as the owner uses it as a workshop year round. |
