Queen Anne Condo

Location: Lower Queen Anne/Seattle Center
Architect: Carlisle Classic Homes
Completion Date: 2011

Originally set up as an ADA accessible condo unit, the new owners of this home did not need the special accessibility and therefore desired to remodel it to meet their needs.  The context of the building is extremely natural and raw with the exposed concrete floors, walls, ceilings, and expressed systems.  This palette gave a coolness to the unit that the owners desired to warm up with new finishes and fixtures.  Mahogany cabinetry in the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom did just the trick.

Functionality in the bathroom was improved with a new shower set up, vanity, and linen cabinetry.  In the kitchen, instead of having a small island, we designed a large peninsula that extends into a full height pantry cabinet to increase storage space without impacting traffic patterns or sizes of adjacent spaces.

Giving the ability to close off the bedroom for privacy was also important.  We designed a large frosted glass, gliding barn-style door for one of the openings.  This allowed natural light to still enter the bedroom and didn’t shrink the feeling of the space.  The opening between the kitchen and bedroom was handled with a solid core slab door on hidden hinges with a relite above.  The door catch was done with magnets so that no hardware is needed.  The combination of hidden hinges and lack of hardware gives the feeling of a moveable wall as opposed to a door.  Both of these “door” details fit blended seamlessly with the modern feel of the condo.
